Instagram Just Changed Your Profile Grid: Here’s How to Fix It

Hands hold a phone displaying home interior images, with "minimal interior" text. Glass vases with white flowers are in the background.

If you’ve looked at your Instagram profile lately and thought, "Wait, why does everything look weird?", you’re not alone.

In 2025, Instagram finally killed the "perfect square." After over a decade of 1:1 squares, your profile grid is now made of tall rectangles (4:5 ratio). If your old photos look cut off or your "grid puzzles" are a mess, don't panic. Here is the simple breakdown of why this happened and how you can fix your feed in minutes.

Why did they change it?

It feels annoying, but there are actually some good reasons for the switch:

  • Phones are tall, not square: We use our phones vertically. A tall photo fills up way more of the screen than a square one. It just looks better.

  • No more awkward Reel crops: Since Reels are vertical videos, they used to get cropped into weird squares on your grid. Now, the 4:5 rectangle shows off your video covers much better.

  • It’s how we take photos: Most of us snap photos in "Portrait" mode anyway. This change means you don't have to chop off the top or bottom of your pictures just to make them fit your profile.

How to Fix Your Messy Grid

You don't have to delete your old posts! Use these 2025 tools to tidy things up:

1. Use the "Adjust Preview" Tool

This is the fastest fix for old square photos that now look zoomed in.

  1. Tap on an old post.

  2. Hit the three dots (...) at the top.

  3. Tap "Adjust Preview."

  4. From here, you can move the photo up or down so your face isn't cut off, or tap "Fit" to add a little border so the whole square shows up.

2. Swap Your Reel Covers

Did you know you can change a Reel cover after you post it?

  1. Go to your Reel and hit Edit.

  2. Tap "Cover."

  3. You can pick a better frame from the video or upload a fresh, tall photo from your phone. Now your grid looks professional again.

3. Drag and Drop (The Best Feature!)

If your old posts are just a disaster, use the new Rearrange tool.

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit Profile.

  2. Tap Rearrange Grid.

  3. Now you can literally drag and drop your posts. Move those old, messy squares to the bottom of your feed where no one sees them!

Pro Tip for New Posts: The "Safe Zone"

From now on, stop posting squares. Start posting in 4:5 ratio (1080 x 1350 pixels).

The Trick: Keep the most important stuff—like your face or text—right in the middle of the photo. That way, if Instagram ever changes the layout again, your main content is still safe in the center.
